Nancy Chambers

Artist of the monthShop now

Nancy is self-taught. She spent 30 years in the charity sector leading campaigns that raised millions for good causes, and she began exhibiting in 2019.

She was a keen art collector and amateur painter at the time, and her first exhibition was a local art trail in Bristol. The warm welcome bowled her over, and she sold more than 50 paintings in her first six months.

Her paintings have been selected for juried exhibitions including the Society of British Artists in London and the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in Bristol, and collectors around the world have taken them home.

About her practice

Nancy’s still lifes are all about bringing nature indoors, from city gardens to kitchen tables. Bold colour, rich texture and uncluttered compositions give delicate flowers like poppies a vivid presence you can feel across a room.

She often thinks about Emanuele Coccia’s book, The Philosophy of Home: Domestic Space and Happiness, and his line, “The whole world is outside, but everything inside is chosen.” It rings true for Nancy as she looks for beauty in the everyday things we choose to live with, like the bloom on a plum or the light passing through a vase of flowers. Painting them is her way of learning to look more closely.

Sustainability runs through her work too. Nancy repurposes everyday tools and materials, painting dandelions with needles and poppies with milk cartons, so discarded things get a second life.
