Nancy’s drawn to what poppies manage to be: tall, slender stems and papery petals that look breakable, on a plant that’s tough as old boots. Here, pink and magenta poppies in many shades sit against a deep blue background, a contrast that holds its own in lots of different rooms. The white foreground lifts everything, and if you look closely you’ll find soft shadows and one fallen petal. At 70cm square it’s big enough to anchor a wall, so think above the sideboard or at the end of a hallway.
