By Ripe 3, things have properly shifted. The background’s a deeper blue, the drips are heavier, and the banana - still recognisably itself - is caught in a moment that feels like it’s mid-change, somewhere between solid and liquid, fresh and overripe. It’s the most dramatic of the three paintings, and the most fun: that contrast between the crisp graphic shape of the fruit and the loose, flowing paint gives it a real sense of energy. As the final piece in the Ripe trilogy, this is where the story Day-z set up in the first painting comes to a head - a playful, visual take on the natural process of things ripening, changing and moving on.
