Still Life (Fried) does exactly what it says on the tin - it takes the classic still life, the kind of painting that’s usually full of fruit bowls and flowers, and swaps it all out for a fried egg. It’s a proper art-history joke, but it’s also a genuinely beautiful painting in its own right. Set against that signature bright turquoise, the egg white is built up with moulding paste to give it real texture and depth, while the yolk stays smooth and glossy, the contrast giving the whole piece a sculptural, almost touchable quality. There’s something brilliant about taking a subject this ordinary and giving it the full classical still-life treatment as it makes you look at both the egg and the tradition a bit differently.
